Favourite Sporting Moment

Kieren Perkins wining gold in the 1,500m freestyle at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He was out of form. He had a panic attack. He was thinking about ‘ditching the final and disappearing into obscurity’. He was feeling like he would embarrass himself, his coach and his family. Despite these thoughts and feelings, he did his job and won the final from Lane 8. This performance epitomises what mental toughness is all about.

More About shayne

Shayne Duncan was registered as a psychologist in May 2009 after completing an Honours degree in Psychology from the University of New England in 2008.

With a knack for steering every assignment he could towards a sporting subject, the research Shayne completed for his Honours thesis was on the effects of instructional self-talk on putting performance in novice and expert golfers.

Shayne first joined Condor Performance in 2009 as a provisional psychologist while completing his 2-year registration pathway, and remained a Performance Psychologist until the end of 2013, working with performers across more than 30 sports.

Since then, Shayne has worked across various clinical settings in industry, including crisis mental health, drug and alcohol counselling, employee assistance programs, occupational rehabilitation, and, more recently, within the NDIS, where he assists participants and their families to enhance their quality of life.

Between 2017 and 2020, Shayne ran a rugby league website dedicated to educating coaches and players on performance enhancement and building successful rugby league programs. During this time, Shayne completed case studies on rugby league teams at the following levels: High School (Ipswich SHS), Under-20’s (Gold Coast Titans), Queensland Cup (Tweed Heads Seagulls), NRL (Melbourne Storm) and NSW Women’s State of Origin. These case studies involved interviews with the coach and footage of training sessions.

Over the course of his career, Shayne has also worked with medical students, poker players, traders in financial markets, musicians and actors, as well as sales teams seeking an edge in their performance.

Shayne’s experience in short-term solution-focused therapy means he can assist performers who are seeking a short-term ‘mental boost’ all the way up to those looking for someone to join them as they navigate the ups, downs, twists and turns of their sporting or performance career.

Shayne’s favourite sports to watch are NRL, NFL and Squash. His favourite sports to play are squash and swimming.
